Film is the most influential form of storytelling to me. I use art to express how films inspire my creativity.

Horror fascinates me as a genre so of course, my first short film is a horror film. Looking back, there is a lot that I would love to change in the storytelling – we really just wanted to experiment with sowing mystery as is usual in the opening scene of a classic horror.

I do like that I was able to incorporate a sense of my graphic novel influences, which is the reason I chose the black and white aesthetic. This filter choice was also influenced by my love of the early universal ‘creature feature’ films of the 1920s, my favourite being Murnau’s Nosferatu.

Band Promo Video: Peasant Tears

Filmed using Canon EOS M5 digital camera and iPhone
Edited using Premiere Pro
Acted, Directed, Pre-Production (Story-Boarding), Edited, Promotional Material Director

Together with my media studies team we created this promotional video for a fictional alternative rock band, Peasant Tears. Our brief was to showcase the unique style of the band and promote one of their upcoming events. The rest was open-ended.

Our approach was to put a satirical slant on typical rock videos, and pay homage to documentary styled comedies such as Spinal Tap. I think we succeeded in getting this across and it was great fun exploring the comedy / satire genre.

Cartoon Art Project

‘Horror-fying’ Cute Cartoon Characters

In creating this art, my greatest inspirations come from films such as David Cronenberg’s The Fly and my personal favourite film, John Carpenter’s The Thing. The grotesque transformations of the ‘heroes’ in each story led me to experiment with subverting cartoon favourites: Tanjiro from Demon Slayer, Garfield the cat, Sully from Monsters Inc., Dr Octopus from Spider-man and Linguini and Remy from Ratatouille.

Cronenberg created one of the most terrifying movie monsters of all time from a mundane and harmless fly. The consequences of scientist Seth Brundle’s arrogance influenced my Ratatouille cartoon, where I’ve transformed the cute rodent wannabe chef into a horrifying parasite. Gruesome details on Garfield, Dr Octopus and Sully come from organic body horror of The Thing and the video game Bloodborne.

Perhaps a surprising twist on this is that sometimes inspiration for my subversive character types comes from more mainstream films such as Whiplash. The way Damien Chazelle twists the typical musical drama protagonist’s journey makes it stand out, and inspires me to look at traditional characters and plots from a new perspective.

Satire also plays a part in the creation of my horrific interpretations. In the future I would love to get some of these characters moving on film as animations. I’d just love to see where they end up.

Graphic Art Projects

Duality, the doppelganger, who can you trust?

Character-driven storytelling is endlessly fascinating to me. Questions of whether a person’s morality is unwavering and definite, or fluid and unreliable, is one of the reasons that comic book storytelling is so compelling.

Since before even Jekyll and Hyde, the idea of a character split good / evil has been turned into stories.

TwoFace in Batman is one of the most visual examples of this concept, whereas Walter White, in Breaking Bad, demonstrates an internal conflict that might not be immediately externally obvious.

Eventually, like Dr Jekyll, Walter White creates his own named dark persona in Heisenberg. This idea is similarly reflected in spinoff series, Better Call Saul, when Jimmy McGill creates Saul Goodman.

These characters inspire me to recreate them in black and white graphic drawings that heighten the contrast that exists within them.

Japanese horror, both graphic novels and film, heavily influence my black and white drawings too. Charlie Adlard’s artwork for The Walking Dead comics and Junji Ito’s manga artwork, in books such as Uzumaki, emphasise granular texture and freakish detail. I also admire Ryan Ottley’s work in the Invincible comics and use his gore as inspiration often.

Superheroes, at heart, are all dual characters and all began as graphic novels / comics. And as the comic book media has expanded outward beyond the page and into both film (Logan and the entire MCU) and various series (The Walking Dead, Superman and Lois etc), it has allowed for far more graphic cinematography to become common in big summer blockbusters.

For me, characters drive the plot in any great story. I could be a little bit obsessed with great characters!

Complex characters whether in books, comics or on the screen, greatly impact the creative aspects of my life. They also directly influence how I process and attempt to construct narrative in my own stories.

Album Cover, Instagram Account and Tour Poster: Peasant Tears

I created these pieces, alongside my Band Marketing video for Peasant Tears, to promote the new album across multiple media to generate audience awareness. The first is an advertisement featuring the album cover artwork and the release date. The second is an Instagram account with a series of posts and finally, a tour poster promoting the locations where they will perform, where tickets can be purchased, details of their own store and how to follow them on social media.
